I have my own family ancestry and photo works that I use for inspiration. In terms of media, I found the drama series "The Underground Railroad" to be moving. It's a historical fiction series with the specific story I think, but overall shows the culture of the time and challenges of that time with the Underground Railroad.
Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen (a tale about a Mami Wata-the African term for mermaid)
Alejandro Caragena's photographic series "Carpoolers"; Tom Kiefer's photographic series "El Sueño Americano."; Performance art pieces by Carlos Martiel ie. "Cuerpo" & "South Body 2019"; Handwoven collages by Samin Ahmadzadeh;
The Chosen
Pedagogies of Crossing by M. Jacqui Alexander
"Juliantla" by Joan Sebastian is a song that comes to mind when I think of Voyages and Journeys. Joan Sebastian is a singer known as the Poet of Mexico. I first listened and sang along to his music in my brother in law's semi truck as my family drove from California to Indianapolis in 2003. The song speaks of traveling to many new cities, but having nothing compare to his country side and land back home. It's a reminder of what my family left behind, not because they didn't love their land, but because they wanted a world of opportunities and dreams for their children. It's very bitter-sweet.
